The Electromedical Sector was created in 1982 and today is made up of 45 manufacturing and distribution companies of diagnostic, monitoring and therapy products and systems based on electronic or computer technology.
Given the wide range of products in consideration, various different fields of application can be mentioned: Medical Imaging, Monitoring, Electrocardiography, Defibrillators, Anaesthesia, Ventilation, Incubators, Endoscopy, Poligraphy, Respiratory Medicine, Sterilisation, Infusion Pumps, Electrosurgery and Clinical Information Systems.
One of the most relevant characteristics of this Sector, besides its great product diversity, is the continuous technological innovation process of its products. This has a great impact on healthcare procedures in its endeavour to put at the professional’s disposal the main technological advances applied to his speciality. An example could be patient monitoring technologies or the latest advances in the treatment and fusion of different medical imaging forms (for example, PET+CAT, PET+NMR).
In addition, the industry has made considerable effort in the last few years in research to find solutions to healthcare access and general improvement. In this way, the development of Telemedicine has put at the disposal of the healthcare professional new collaboration tools and has made it possible to carry out remote diagnostic tests or surgical operations, as also competent patient home monitoring.
A further step forward, in the near future, new personal devices and specialised information systems will help the general population to become more actively involved in looking after their health, making it easier to carry out of activities and habits for the prevention of illness and disease.
